*8Things: On Your Bedside Table

8things from Magpie Girl

The things you keep close at hand are usually the most reliable, handy, treasured items in your stash. So I ask you, what do you keep on your bedside table? I’ll show you mine if you show me yours…

*8Things: On My Bedside Table

1. The Body Shops’ Hemp Hand Protector — smell suspiciously like a teenager’s bedroom after the parentals have been away, but it works wonders

2. Burt’s Bees – Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme -  my feet love this stuff.

3. Vintage red and gold reading glasses case from Tonya. (Occasionally, my glasses are actually in it.)

4. Divine Dreaming mp3 – a sleep/dream enhancing meditation from the beloved Leonie Allen.

5. Your Nine Year Old and Your Ten- to Fourteen-Year-Old – invaluable child development guidebooks. (All of them are great.)

6. Music & Silence by Rose Tremaine – an excellent piece of historic fiction about Denmark’s King Christian IV.

7. Sublingual Melatonin and 5-HTP – – because melatonin by itself increases depression. (Wish the sleep doc had told me that when she FIRST suggested meltaonin!)

8. A spiral note book and pen, usually with a collaged cover. The one I’m using right now I collaged with my travel art kit while in Paris.

1. Lip balm – religiously used, generally applied before goodnight kisses
2. Eucerin Hand as well as foot cream
3. A pencil and paper to take down those reminders for myself prior to nodding off
4. Kindle Reader – a couple of books from which to select
5. IPhone – used for alarm or for quick Scrabble game before dozing off
6. At least two articles or current books I’m reading aside from the Kindle books
7. Sudoku puzzle book
8. Nail strengthener

All of these items can be used just prior to sleep and sort of guarantee me not getting up again; all encouraging relaxation and sleep:)

Isn’t it fun to write things like “made that collage in Paris.” I know it hasn’t all been a cup of tea over there, but I’m glad you’ve had the chance to travel and explore Europe a bit with your family.

I must bemoan the fact that I have no bedside table. If you can remember our apartment, the image of not much space will surely come to mind. Our bed fits neatly between the door to the kitchen and the door to the bedroom. So, no night stand. If I had one – which I fantasize will one day be back in my life – here’s what I imagine would be one it.
1. The alarm clock so I could hit snooze instead of having to get up because it’s on the floor right now.
2. glass of lovely water – I LOVE to drink water these days. Crazy for it.
3. my thermometer for tracking fertility, now in the phase of hoping for no surprises
4. pictures of my 2 sweeties who are each within feet of me so I really could just look at them, but you know how that goes
5. Burts Bees cuticle cream
6. notebook for all sorts of crazy ideas for writing, possibly a blog (looking forward to our talk on Monday)
7. foot cream
8. secret opening to a tunnel to Denmark so I could come see you guys

I have a tiny bedside table but the dresser is just beyond so I’m counting that, too. :]

1. lip balm
2. glass of water (can’t go to bed without one, no matter where I am… odd really)
3. a Celtic devotional by Caitlin Matthews
4. usually one or two other books, currently The Case for God by Karen Armstrong
5. a large bobby pin to keep my hair out of my eyes while reading
6. a bamboo plant
7. leaning against the bamboo plant a frame with, “There is a path from me to you I am constantly looking for” (Rumi) in it.
8. cellphone to use as an alarm clock on the rare occasions Dan can’t wake me up the morning.

1. A rather gothic-looking rose candelabra
2. L’heure Bleu body lotion by Guerlain
3. Bobbi Brown face powder
4. Circular hair brush
5. My Kindle
6. Plastic bottle of water (because my cat drinks from it it I use a glass, which I didn’t know for months until I opened my eyes and saw her doing it. Yuck.)
7. Nail clippers
8. Four pairs of earrings – I always forget to take them out until I’m actually in bed then I can’t be bothered to get out again so they accumulate.

That’s just the top, there are two shelves as well…

As usual, I’m late to the game, but I still like to play. :)

The website post has pictures too.

1. Alarm clock. I live with a compact travel alarm. Very light, very cleanly designed. The next thing about it is that it has a graduated alarm.

It starts out softly peeping. Peep-peep, peep-peep. Then it gets a little louder. Bee-beep! Bee-beep! Then it progresses to Be-be-be-Beep! Be-be-be-Beep! And then even louder. And finally (if I haven’t woken up enough to turn it off yet, it screams at me. Beebeebeebeebeebeebee!

2. Large glow-in-the-dark stars and moons. I like how they continue to glow after I’ve turned out the light.

3. Half-egg shaped ceramic stoneware pinch-pot by potter Jim Thompson. This is the perfect shape to cradle in my palm.

4. Eye pillow. Just the right weight for tired eyes. Covered in vivid cranberry silk.

5. Photo of my husband from early in our relationship.

6. Box of facial tissues.

7. Hand lotion. I am greedy for the little sample bottles of hand lotion from the Hampton Inn. Lovely stuff. You can’t get it commercially other than by staying the night, so I am eking out the ones I have. Right next to the little bottles is a huge bottle of Aveeno hand lotion. My husband and I both adore Aveeno moisturizing products. Although they can be a little pricey, we haven’t been able to talk ourselves out of buying them, because give us results!

(Edit to add: I also have some of that lemony Burt’s Bees cuticle cream!)

8. A very small, glossy print of one of Mary Cassett’s mother-and-child paintings, cut out from a calender I had some twenty years ago. Before I was a mother, this reminded me of the tender feelings of parenting. When I was trying to have children, this kept some snuggly baby energy in my life, even when it was too painful to think about. Since my daughter has come into my life, it still sits propped up on the photo of my husband because it still has lovely energy.

Now, I actually have tons more nearby and at hand because I really have a bedside bookshelf, but let’s stick with the top. :)

My bedside table is actually a vintage straw luggage and I’ve had it since I was 14. (I’m 30 now. :)) My late fiancee bought it for me so I have a lotta good feelings when it’s the last thing I see before I fall asleep.Anyway, here are the 8 things I have in it:
1. Books- usually comics coz that helps relax me before bedtime.
2. Bottle of water- those warm tropical nights
3. Body and hand lotion- when i wanna feel sexy (hee hee)
4.Box of Kleenex- curse those morning sinuses
5. Notebook & Pen- For gr8 midnight ideas
6. Phone – In case of any emergencies
7. Small radio – for those sleepless nights when I’m too worried to sleep. Listening to BBC can put my life back in perspective and I know there are others worse off than I.
8. Small box of bedtime medicines like aspirins, cranberry concentrate pills or sleeping pills like valerium- unexpected medical emergencies.
